There are a great deal of editing and proofreading companies floating around out there now, not to mention freelance editors as well. So the question is – which one do you choose? Do you go with an editing service that’s got a ton of pricing options? The best editors? The highest reviews?

After all, what’s the point in hiring a professional editor if they’re barely going to improve your work? Editing is very similar to the field of medicine. You just don’t want a mediocre doctor, ever. It’s pointless to even go to the doctor unless they really know what they are doing… but how can you trust that they know? First thing’s first – would you ever go to a doctor that didn’t have a degree in medicine? Of course not – they wouldn’t even be a real doctor if they didn’t. Many don’t even realize that the title of “doctor” isn’t only granted to those in the medical field – it is also granted to any person who has completed a philosophical postgraduate degree program as well. A PhD has gone through an intensive process in thought development, logic, critical reading and writing. In every doctoral course, the student must write dozens of fully researched academic papers, from 10-20 pages apiece. Then, the PhD candidate must take nine or more hours of comprehensive written essay exams that are graded on the quality of their composition and writing, as well as their content. Finally, the candidate must write a dissertation, which is a fully researched and documented book-length study. During the process, the candidate’s writing is scrutinized by a committee of PhDs, who require excellence before awarding the student their doctorate degree.
